Old-fashioned soda shop in South End closes doors after 25 years

"A cherished establishment in our community." Pike’s Old Fashioned Soda Shop, announced on Tuesday that they will be vacating their long-held location in South End after many years of operation.

Pike’s has been a favorite destination for many, some visiting for the food, others for the desserts. However, one particular item has been a signature offering for over two decades: their hand-stirred sodas.

Randy Chitwood, the owner of Pike’s, noted the rarity of soda shops where one can still enjoy a handmade, hand-stirred Pepsi. He shared his own experience of becoming a customer at Pike’s after trying a hand-stirred drink for the first time.

Chitwood recalled his initial reaction, “The first time I tasted one, I was taken aback by how good they were.”

The Soda Shop, located in the heart of South End, was opened by the Pike family 20 years ago. Chitwood purchased it a few years later, and since then, customers have considered it a cornerstone of Charlotte.

Christy Watson, a regular customer who visits at least once a month, shared, “I don’t think we’ve ever had a disappointing meal here. Sometimes we come just for dessert with our kids.”

Chitwood emphasized the importance of upholding the name and reputation of Pike’s, “We’ve always been committed to living up to their standards.” However, the open sign of Pike’s, which has been illuminated for decades, will soon be turned off, according to Chitwood.

Watson expressed her disappointment, “I’m genuinely saddened. We enjoy coming here; the food is excellent, and the staff is always wonderful.”

Jim Andriotis shared similar sentiments, “It’s a loss. It’s been a part of the community for so long. I feel like South End will lose a bit of its charm.”

Situated right on the light rail line on Camden Road in South End, Pike’s occupies a prime location. Chitwood did not disclose the reasons for their decision to close in this space.

Employees have observed significant changes in South End over the years.

Burkart commented, “What I’ve seen happen here in just two years is simply incredible. I guess it’s time to move on.”

For Chitwood, it’s time to vacate the premises. However, he hinted at future plans, “We’ll move out, put this behind us, and look ahead.”
